Wrong-Way Crash Leaves 2 Dead, 1 Hurt In West Babylon

WEST BABYLON, NY - A wrong-way driver was killed after causing a head-on fatal crash that left a driver injured and their passenger dead on Route 109 near Platt Avenue late Wednesday morning.

Suffolk County Police say that a 63-year-old man was driving a 2005 Chevrolet eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 109 when he struck a 2021 BMW X3 that was traveling in the correct direction at 9:38AM on Wednesday morning.

Officials say that the 63-year-old man driving the vehicle in the wrong direction was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not released by police pending the notification of the next of kin.

The driver of the BMW suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local area hospital for further treatment. The passenger of the BMW, identified as Fernando Goncalves, 79, of West Babylon, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.


Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
