Winter Weather Knocks Down Trees, Wires On Long Island
WOODBURY, NY - Freezing rain and ice accumulation caused numerous trees to fall throughout Long Island on Friday afternoon, causing power and utility outages that impacted hundreds.
Utility crews were scattered throughout the north shore communities of Nassau County after heavy accumulation of freezing rain and ice weighed down trees, causing them to topple. In Woodbury, New York, multiple large trees could be seen blocking residential roadways as a result of the winter storm that impacted the area early Friday morning.
Tangled in the branches and trees were power cables that caught fire. The intersection of Jericho Turnpike and Juneau Boulevard in Woodbury remained blocked off by police while utility crews worked. Smoldering branches could be seen on the ground from where they caught on fire due to them contacting the primary power lines.
While the accumulated ice began to melt on the trees, it brought down large branches due to even more weight being added to the already stressed limbs.
On Muttontown Road in Muttontown, police officers responded to a report of a tree that fell onto a resident’s car while it was parked in the driveway. There were no injuries reported.
Late into Friday night, utility crews are still operating throughout the area and attempting to restore power. A large residential development off of Jericho Turnpike and Plainview Road still has power outages affecting nearly 225 customers, according to PSEG Long Island.
At the time of this article, there have been no reported injuries as a result of the winter weather nightmare.
