Unlicensed Driver Strikes, Kills Pedestrian In Copiague

COPIAGUE, NY - An unlicensed driver was arrested after striking and killing a 45-year-old man crossing Sunrise Highway at Bethpage Road late Monday afternoon.

Suffolk County Police responded to a traffic collision involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 1:30PM at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Bethpage Road in Copiague, New York.

Police say the victim, Baudilio Zamora, 45, of Copiague, was crossing Sunrise Highway southbound at Bethpage Road when he was struck by a 2019 Nissan Altima being operated by Ian Laylor, 33, of Hicksville.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Laylor was arrested at the scene for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Vehicle. He was released with a Desk Appearance Ticket and will be arraigned at the First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check, according to officials.
