Both the mother and father were transported in a stable, but serious condition.

According to police, New York State Troopers began pursuing the suspect as he fled on the New York Thruway going southbound. Troopers requested the assistance of Mawah Police and they shut down the highway, forcing the suspect on the run to surrender. An investigation led the Nassau County Police detectives to Mawah, New Jersey, where they took a Dino Tomassetti, 29, of Brooklyn, in custody for the shooting.

Nassau County Police are still investigating this shooting and the events leading up to it.

UPDATE: Police confirm that Dino Tomassetti’s attack on his parents stemmed from a child custody dispute over his 1-year old child. He attempted to take custody, which he had no right to do, according to Nassau County Police.

When his gun ran out of bullets, he began striking his father over the head with the firearm. The child and mother were not present in the room when the shooting started.

Both parents have been released from the hospital and are recovering.
