The FBI are assisting the Suffolk County Police after officials are concerned that the blast on Fox Island Sunday afternoon could lead to terrorist activity.

The FBI has joined Suffolk County Police in the investigation into the device that was detonated on Fox Island, a quiet island just a few miles from the mainland, this past Sunday afternoon.

Investigators are not ruling out the possibility that the explosion on Sunday could lead to a bigger incident.

The Town of Babylon’s Public Safety Department received more than 500 calls regarding the explosion, and was heard as far east as East Islip and as far west as Merrick, according to Town of Babylon Supervisor Richard Schaffer.

Police have released a photo of a boat that was seen leaving the area shortly after the blast. Police describe it as a 23-foot boat with stripes on it.
