Robbery Suspect Shot Critically After Firing At Police In Brooklyn
NYPD Officers shot a robbery suspect critically after he pulled out a gun and began shooting at police in Brooklyn, New York early Tuesday afternoon.
NYPD Officers responded to the Dollar Tree near East 96th and Schenck Street at 4:45PM after employees recognized the man who was involved in a theft earlier in the week. After officers arrived on the scene, officials say the 45-year old man began to start shooting at police officers after they spotted him with a gun visible in his right pocket. The man then began shooting at the police officers.
One NYPD officer returned fire and struck the suspect twice in the neck. Immediately after the police-involved shooting. Officers then switched to render medical aid to the suspect who was shot. CPR was administered at the scene, but the suspect was pronounced deceased.
According to the NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey, “He had just stuck up the cashier at gunpoint, and when the cops arrived, he started wrestling with them, then pulled his gun out and fired twice.”
The Chief of Department went on to say that before the shots rang out on Tuesday, the man approached the cashier and put on an act of attempting to purchase an item. When the cashier popped open the register, the robber then pulled out his gun and pointed it at the cashier. He grabbed the money and then headed for the door. That’s when he ran into the responding police officers.
No officers were reportedly shot, but two were transported to local area hospitals to be evaluated for tinnitus, an issue commonly present after close-range shootings or explosions.
The robber was taken to Brookdale University Hospital in a critical, but stable condition.
