Possible Tornadoes Slam Long Island, Leave 12 Thousand Without Power
Multiple possible tornadoes slammed Long Island late Saturday afternoon after a heavy storm moved through the area. Multiple communities have started picking up the pieces.
Just before 3PM on Saturday, a tornado warning was issued for western Nassau County as powerful storms moved through the area. A few residents in Levittown, New York stated that they saw a funnel cloud moving through the area as the winds picked up and rain was coming down sideways.
A house under construction in Levittown, New York on the corner of Heather Lane and Clover Lane was the victim of serious damage from a large tree being uprooted and falling onto the home. That same tree caused a branch to smash out a window on the house just behind it, where a man sat on his couch. The man spoke to our crew on the ground and told us that glass just missed him as he was sitting by the window.
Another home on Cornflower Road sustained damage after a large tree fell on it as well. This house was occupied at the time and the resident escaped injury when the tree came crashing down onto the roof.
A home on Liberty Street in Uniondale, New York had its roof blown off from the force of the winds.
Nassau County was not the only impacted area from the severity of the storm. Planes from a Shirley, New York airport were reportedly overturned after another possible tornado struck the area. A Shirley shopping center had moderate damage and there are reports that objects over 50lbs were knocked over by the force of the winds.
Suhaan Khanna, a Levittown resident, spoke to our crew on the ground about the extent of the damage from the possible tornado.
