3 Tornadoes Confirmed to Have Hit Long Island, Other Reports Being Investigated
The National Weather Service has confirmed three tornadoes touched down and impacted multiple areas on Long Island late Saturday afternoon.
After surveying the damage from multiple reported tornadoes that impacted Long Island Saturday afternoon at around 3PM, the National Weather Service confirmed on Sunday afternoon that an EF-0 tornado touched down in southeast Woodmere, New York and continued on the ground before lifting in northern Levittown, New York.
Along the path of this EF-0 tornado, many large trees were toppled, powerlines were knocked down, and shingles blown off of homes.
In addition to the Woodmere EF-0, a secondary tornado of the same strength was confirmed later Sunday evening. This tornado impacted the Oakdale and East Islip communities of Suffolk County.
At approximately 8:30PM, the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down in Shirley, New York, causing significant damage on Saturday. Measured wind speeds in EF-1 tornadoes can reach up to 110mph, according to the National Weather Service.
According to the National Weather Service, an EF-0 tornado can produce strong winds of up to 65mph to 85mph. This is one of the weakest rated tornadoes in the Enhanced Fujita Scale.
No injuries have been reported still, but there are still accounts of neighborhoods without power while local utility crews work around the clock to restore the power grid to its original status before the storms.
The National Weather Service has crews currently gathering information about another 4 possible tornadoes that touched down throughout Long Island.
