Police Car Overturns, Pedestrian Critically Struck During Stolen Car Pursuit

WYANDANCH, NY - A suspect fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle was involved in two hit-and-run crashes on Tuesday afternoon. A responding police car was also involved in a crash that left both vehicles overturned.

Suffolk County Police Department’s Firearms Suppression Team officers attempted to pull over a vehicle that left a known drug area near Sunrise Highway and Bayview Avenue in Amityville at 1:56PM on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers attempted to pull over the black Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV at County Line Road and Francine Avenue in North Amityville, when the driver fled. While attempting to flee from officers, the driver slammed into a Subaru. The driver of the Subaru was not injured, according to police.

The Mercedes continued fleeing and eventually struck a pedestrian, critically injuring her, near the intersection of Straight Path and South 18th Street in Wyandanch, New York at around 2:00PM.

The pedestrian was identified as Marie Anne Renaudin-Cene, 60, of Wheatley Heights. She was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

A responding unmarked police car that had its emergency lights activated was traveling northbound on Straight Path near Washington Avenue when an uninvolved Mazda made a left turn in front of it. The police car collided with the Mazda and both vehicles overturned. The Mazda landed on its roof and the police car landed on its side.

The driver of the Mazda was transported to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Four police officers in the unmarked police car were transported to local area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the Mercedes had a temporary Florida license plate of “10DEMT”. The vehicle was occupied by two men, according to officials.

After an investigation, police determined that the vehicle was reported stolen from New York City.
