Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Train In Farmingdale

FARMINGDALE, NY - A pedestrian was fatally struck by a train at the Merritts Road railroad crossing early Thursday afternoon, temporarily suspending service to the Ronkonkoma Long Island Railroad line.

Just after 11:00AM on Thursday, multiple emergency service agencies responded to the railroad crossing at Merritts Road in Farmingdale, New York for reports of a pedestrian that was struck by a train. Nassau County Police, Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police, and the Farmingdale Fire Department all responded to the scene.

When emergency services arrived on scene, they located the victim just west of the crossing at Merritts Road and pronounced them deceased at the scene.

An investigation is still ongoing by detectives from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police.

According to the Long Island Railroad, the Ronkonkoma Branch’s service was temporarily suspended in both directions between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma after an “unauthorized person” was struck by a train just east of Bethpage. Service was restored to the line at 1:30PM. Still, officials warned riders using the line that they should expect delays as a result.
