1 Killed, 1 Hurt After Fiery Long Island Expressway Crash In Plainview

PLAINVIEW, NY - An 89-year-old man was killed when his vehicle burst into flames after being struck from behind while stopped in the westbound HOV lane of the Long Island Expressway late Tuesday night.

Just after 11:30PM, Nassau County Police and the Plainview Fire Department were notified of a traffic collision on the Long Island Expressway in the westbound lanes between Round Swamp Road and Sunnyside Boulevard.

According to investigators, the 89-year-old’s 1999 Ford Explorer was stopped in the HOV lane when it was struck by a 2018 Kia Sportage traveling in the same direction. The force of the impact caused the vehicle to burst into flames and become fully involved with fire.

The occupant of the Ford SUV that caught on fire, a man from Oceanside, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 36-year-old man from Miller Place driving the Kia SUV was transported to Nassau University Medical Center with a head injury. Police say he is in a stable condition.

Westbound Long Island Expressway between Round Swamp Road and Sunnyside Boulevard remained closed as officials continued their investigation into the fatal crash throughout the overnight hours.
