Philadelphia Reaches 500 Homicides In Single Year, Breaking Grim Milestone
The City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania reached a grim milestone on Wednesday after a 55-year old woman was shot multiple times and killed, making her the 500th homicide victim in the city for this year.
A woman was rushed to Jefferson Hospital in a critical condition and pronounced dead at 5:15PM on Wednesday, according to police officials. The woman, who could be heard on a security camera screaming for somebody to call 911 was shot multiple times in her chest and killed in South Philadelphia. The shooting occurred at around 4:30PM.
Police officials from Philadelphia released details surrounding the shooting. “This is a domestic incident. A male was chasing a woman on the 600 block of Jackson Street, firing five times…”
The shooter, who police revealed to be the victim’s estranged husband, could be seen walking away from the shooting casually.
This fatal shooting marks the 500th homicide in the City of Philadelphia within 2021, making it the most deadly year on record since 1990.
Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw stated in a press conference, “each and every homicide carries with it a profound sense of loss. However, for our city to have reached such a tragic milestone - 500 lives cut short - it carries a weight that is almost impossible to truly comprehend.”
