Massive Fire Erupts At Islandia Recycling Facility

ISLANDIA, NEW YORK - A recycling facility’s waste transfer building burst into flames early Monday morning as firefighters from multiple fire departments responded to the scene to battle the blaze.

At around 2:15AM on Monday, June 12, 2023, the Hauppauge Fire Department responded to a reported building fire located at 228 Blydenburgh Road, Islandia, NY. Firefighters arrived on scene and were immediately met with flames and smoke pouring from the waste transfer facility.

As volunteer firefighters from multiple other departments began arriving on scene, flames from the blaze began shooting through the roof of the building, forcing firefighters to fight the inferno defensively using tower ladder apparatus to drench the burning piles of garbage below with water.

Witnesses reported that the flames shot at least 20 feet high in the air over the roof of the building as firefighters began tackling the blaze.

The fire began to darken quickly after the tower ladders and some fire crews with fire hoses from the ground level attacked the flames.

The Smithtown Fire Department, Central Islip Fire Department, East Brentwood Fire Department, Exchange Ambulance Corps, Central Islip - Hauppauge Ambulance Volunteer Corps, Nesconsent Fire Department, and Islip Terrace Fire Department were all requested as mutual aid.

The Suffolk County Police Department Arson Squad and Town of Islip Fire Marshals were requested to the scene and are actively investigating the cause of the fire.

The Town of Islip HazMat was also requested to respond to the scene.

Veteran’s Highway near Blydenburgh Road remained closed for multiple hours throughout the early morning as firefighters battled the fire and continued to hit hotspots within the garbage piles. It has since been reopened.

There were no injuries reported in this incident.
