74-Year-Old Man Critically Injured In Merrick Road Crash
MASSAPEQUA, NEW YORK - A 74 year old man is in a critical condition following a two vehicle crash that occurred on Merrick Road near Joludow Drive late Thursday night.
Nassau County Police Department released information on Friday detailing a serious crash that occurred on Merrick Road in front of John J. Burns Park in Massapequa, New York at 8:30PM on Thursday, June 22, 2023.
Officials say a white 2019 Genesis four-door sedan traveling westbound and a blue 2015 Honda Pilot was traveling eastbound when they collided near the intersection of Joludow Drive. The driver of the Genesis sedan, a 74 year old man, suffered serious injuries and is now listed in a critical condition at a local area hospital.
According to witnesses, the Genesis sedan collided with a utility pole following the initial crash with the Honda, causing extensive damage to the passenger side of the car.
The driver of the Honda Pilot, a 56 year old man, suffered only minor injuries to his wrist in the collision. He was also transported to a local area hospital.
Witnesses at the scene of the crash say that multiple good samaritans sprung into action and were able to rip the door off of one of the vehicles where a victim was trapped. The door had been pinned shut due to damage from the impact.
Merrick Road remained shut down between Arlyn Drive West and Block Boulevard in both directions for multiple hours as police investigated the collision. Crime Scene Search Unit officers responded to the scene to document the serious crash.
There is no criminality suspected in this collision at this time, according to Nassau County Police.
Priority News Network spoke to Richard Sine, a commuter who frequently drives on Merrick Road to get to his job. “[The crash] doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. You have people who treat this road like its a drag strip or a highway. Something’s gotta be done. Something’s gotta change. How many people have to get hurt before a change is made?”, Richard Sine said frustratedly.
Both vehicles were towed and impounded for safety checks by the Nassau County Police Emergency Services Bureau.
The investigation is still ongoing.
