Brush Fire Sparks In Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park

PLAINVIEW, NEW YORK - Firefighters battled a brush fire that sparked inside the Town of Oyster Bay’s Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park early Friday evening. The fire was quickly contained by the volunteer firefighters.

Firefighters from the Plainview Fire Department responded to the Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park at 175 Washington Avenue, Plainview, New York 11803 on Friday evening at around 4:15PM after a brush fire was reported by parkgoers who noticed the smoke rising from the trail area in the back of the park.

The fire sparked in the northwest corner of the park, which includes a nature walking trail and a densely wooded area that backs up to a residential neighborhood.

Upon the arrival of fire crews, they found a small area of fire spreading through the brush. Grey smoke could be seen rising from the park as firefighters began battling the blaze. Firefighters accessed the hard to reach burning area from an entrance on Beaumont Drive, allowing fire hoses to be stretched directly into the scene.

The fire was swiftly contained by the volunteer firefighters from the Plainview Fire Department.

Steven Wagner, a visitor of the Town of Oyster Bay park said, “At first we thought the smell was just from the wildfire smoke that’s being blown over from Canada still, but then we started seeing thicker smoke coming from the woods over there…”

There were no injuries reported from this fire.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to respond to the scene and investigate the cause of the fire.
