Hundreds Protest In New York City Streets After Tyre Nichols Bodycam Footage Released
TIMES SQUARE, NY - Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Midtown Manhattan on Friday night after Memphis Police publicly released the bodycam footage showing the events that led up to the death of Tyre Nichols.
Hundreds of people gathered in the heart of Manhattan at around 7:00PM on Friday night in anticipation for the release of the Memphis Police Department bodycam footage that showed the events leading up to the death of Tyre Nichols.
Multiple people were arrested by the NYPD after a police car’s windshield was stomped on by a protester. In the scuffle, other protesters attempted to fight with police officers performing the arrest.
Protesters marched through the streets of Manhattan chanting “FTP! F—K The Police!” and “Whose Streets? Our Streets!”
As the march approached West 42nd Street and 10th Avenue, NYPD barricaded West 42nd Street. More than fifty police officers blocked protesters from marching further west.
While protesters were bottlenecked at the blockade, residents from a nearby apartment complex threw multiple eggs at the demonstrators below on the street. It did not appear that anybody was injured as a result.
The protest dispersed nearly thirty minutes after they moved back east towards Times Square.
The five former Memphis Police Department officers involved in the death of Tyre Nichols were fired and charged with murder. Nichols was pulled over on a traffic stop by Memphis officers after reckless driving. On January 10th, 2023, three days after the traffic stop, Nichols died in the hospital.
Attorneys for the Nichols family said that an independent autopsy was conducted and concluded that Nichols suffered from “extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating”.
