First Major Snowfall of Winter 2023 Impacts Long Island
LONG ISLAND, NY - Slippery roads covered in snow and slush caused multiple crashes and heavily impacted motorists late Monday night into Tuesday morning as Long Island experienced its first major snowfall for the winter.
Long Island’s first snowfall of the 2023 winter season finally arrived late Monday night into early Tuesday morning. The snowstorm ended a record-breaking period in which Long Island has not seen significant snowfall since the beginning of the winter season.
According to the National Weather Service, areas in Nassau County received about 3-4 inches of snow. Whereas some areas in Suffolk County totaled up to 5 inches.
Multiple accidents due were caused by the poor road conditions brought on by the inclement weather. In one reported crash at around 9:45PM on Monday night in Oyster Bay Cove, a vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a utility pole, knocking down live power lines that were sparking. Firefighters and police responded and secured the scene. It was unclear if there were any injuries.
PSEG responded to numerous reports of wires arching and falling down due to the heavy snow and rain mix. Some outages were reported throughout Nassau and Suffolk County during the storm.
