Homeless Man Charged With DWI After Striking, Killing 24-Year-Old Woman With His Car

FREEPORT, NY - Police arrested a homeless man after he struck and killed a 24-year-old female pedestrian on Babylon Turnpike near Carroll Street on Wednesday night. The driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

Nassau County Police say that at around 7:05PM on Wednesday night, a 24-year-old female pedestrian was struck by a 2018 Nissan Sentra that was traveling southbound on Babylon Turnpike. The Nissan was operated by Tyshaun M. Johashen, 32, a homeless man.

The female pedestrian, whose identity is being held pending notification to the family, suffered severe traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say that during a subsequent investigation, police officers placed Johashen under arrest at the scene, where he remained immediately following the crash.

Johashen is charged with Manslaughter 2nd Degree, Vehicular Manslaughter 2nd Degree, Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 1st Degree, and Unlicensed Operation of a vehicle.

He will be arraigned on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at First District Court at 99 Main Street in Hempstead.
