First Day Delayed for NYC Schools
New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio, Teachers Union have delayed the opening of New York City schools by 10 days. The first day of in-person and remote classes will be on September 21st.
To avoid a teachers’ strike and calm nervous parents, Mayor Bill DeBlasio announced on Tuesday that New York City schools would not open for another 10 days.
The city’s teachers’ union, which holds persuasive power, planned to authorize an illegal strike for its 75,000 members.
The deal was decided during an overnight session between the union and City Hall. The deal was struck after the union pushed for more time to prepare the teachers and principals in their union for the largest, and most observed school reopening in the history of New York City schools.
