Driver Swerves to Avoid Pedestrians on Sunrise Highway, Fatally Strikes Man in Blue Point

BLUE POINT, N.Y. – A 69-year-old man was struck and killed when a driver swerved to avoid hitting two other pedestrians on Sunrise Highway late Saturday night.

According to Suffolk County Police, at approximately 8:35PM, a 36-year-old male driver was traveling eastbound on Sunrise Highway, west of Waverly Avenue, in a 2015 Ford Mustang when he swerved to avoid three pedestrians in the roadway. Despite the attempt to avoid them, the vehicle struck a 69-year-old male pedestrian in the center lane.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, along with the other two pedestrians and a passenger in the vehicle, were not injured.

The Mustang has been impounded for a safety inspection as part of the investigation, and a routine field sobriety test was conducted for the driver of the car. There is no criminality suspected at this time, according to preliminary reports by police.

The reason the victim and the other pedestrians were in the traffic lanes prior to the fatal collision remains unclear at this time as the investigation continues.
