Firefighters Battle Brush Fire During Red Flag Warning

COMMACK, NY - Firefighters battled a brush fire between the Sunken Meadow Parkway and a residential neighborhood early Friday evening while Long Island remained under a Red Flag Warning.

After 5:30PM on Friday, the Commack Fire Department responded to a wooded area west of the Sunken Meadow Parkway between the Northern State Parkway and New Highway for a brush fire.

Firefighters were met with approximately 2000 square feet of burning vegetation, just a few hundred feet east of houses on Delaware Avenue in Commack, New York.

Crews were able to swiftly knock down the majority of the fire at around 5:45PM, preventing it from spreading any further.

The Smithtown Fire Department and Kings Park Fire Department were requested to assist at the scene of the fire.

There were no injuries reported and no property damage reported as a result of the fire.

The fire occurred while Long Island and New York City were under a Red Flag Warning issued earlier by the National Weather Service. A Red Flag Warning is defined as when conditions include warm temperatures, very low humidities, and stronger winds that combine to create an increased risk of fire danger.
