16-Year-Old Struck, Pinned Under Car While Riding Bike To Work Dies After 2-Week Coma
SYOSSET, NY - A 16-year-old bicyclist was struck, seriously injured, and pinned underneath a sedan late Sunday morning at the intersection of South Service Road and South Oyster Bay Road. On February 1st, 2023, after a two-week-long coma, the victim died in the hospital.
Nassau County Police and the Syosset Fire Department responded to the South Service Road and South Oyster Bay Road at around 10:45AM after a bicyclist was struck by a sedan.
Police say that the 2017 Nissan sedan, operated by a 54-year-old man, was traveling southbound on South Oyster Bay Road while turning east onto South Service Road when the collision occurred with the 16-year-old bicyclist.
The 16-year-old male was pinned under the Nissan sedan that struck him and required the Syosset Fire Department and Nassau County Police Emergency Service Unit’s assistance to remove him from underneath the car. Airbags were used to lift the vehicle so that first responders could access and free the victim.
The victim was transported to a local area hospital in traumatic arrest. Police confirmed that the victim suffered severe head trauma as a result of the collision.
Due to the serious injury, a crime scene was established on the South Service Road, just east of South Oyster Bay Road.
The driver of the Nissan remained at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
On February 1st, 2023, police say that Benjamin Daggett, of Syosset, was pronounced dead by a hospital physician. Daggett was in a coma for more than two weeks and suffered severe brain damage.
The family of the victim told Newsday that her son was riding his bike to his weekend job when he was struck and critically injured. The teenager was preparing to take the SAT college exam in the spring.
