Armed Carjackers Steal BMW At Roosevelt Field Mall, Crash It On Parkway
Armed carjackers stole a BMW at gunpoint, fled and were involved in a crash late Friday night. Police say the hectic scene started in the parking lot of Roosevelt Field Mall.
At around 8:10PM, Nassau County Police responded to the Roosevelt Field Mall parking lot in Garden City, New York, near Neiman Marcus for a report of a carjacking. Police say the victims were exiting the blue BMW 330i when they were approached by two juvenile suspects, ages 17 and 16 years old.
The suspects took off in the vehicle and entered onto the Meadowbrook State Parkway headed southbound.
A joint effort between the Nassau County Police Department and New York State Police led to spotting the vehicle going southbound on the Meadowbrook State Parkway. The vehicle collided with a Hyundai sedan on the parkway, injuring the 50-year old driver. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
While investigating the initial crime, it was determined that one of the victims assisted in orchestrating the carjacking. He was arrested with the two subjects that took the vehicle by gunpoint.
The unidentified 17-year old suspect is charged with robbery in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal use of a firearm in the first degree, reckless endangerment in the second degree and conspiracy in the fourth degree.
The unidentified 16-year old suspect is charged with robbery in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal use of a firearm in the first degree, and conspiracy in the fourth degree.
The third unidentified 17-year old suspect is charged with robbery in the first degree, criminal use of a firearm in the first degree, and conspiracy in the fourth degree.
The heavy police presence on the Meadowbrook State Parkway prompted a complete shutdown of all southbound lanes of traffic. Heavy traffic was backed up for nearly two miles as a slow one lane detour over a median emptied the backed up cars.
All three suspects will be arraigned on November 6, 2021 at the First District Court and Hempstead, New York.
