2 Rescued After Pickup Truck Flies Off Sunrise Highway, Nearly Rolls Down Steep Hill

WEST BABYLON, NY - Two occupants of a pickup truck were able to escape serious injuries after their vehicle flew over a guardrail and collided with a tree, saving them from dropping at least 20 feet onto a service road below.

At around 8:45PM, the North Babylon Fire Company and Suffolk County Police Department were alerted for a crash with two people trapped inside a vehicle in the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway just east of Hubbards Path on Sunday night.

When first responders arrived on scene, they found a white Chevrolet pickup truck facing the wrong direction and dangling over a guardrail. The pickup truck was being held up on the steep hillside by a tree that spared the truck from dropping at least 20 feet onto the south service road below. The two occupants of the truck were not able to get out of the vehicle.

Firefighters from multiple departments and the Suffolk County Police Emergency Service Unit were able to stabilize the truck and assist both occupants with getting out of the vehicle safely.

Three people in total were transported to local area hospitals as a result of this collision with non-life-threatening injuries.

At least one other vehicle was involved in the crash, with a third victim that was transported to the hospital in addition to the two rescued from the truck.
