1 Critical After Crash In Front of East Massapequa Grocery Store

EAST MASSAPEQUA, NY - A serious crash on Merrick Road near Carman Boulevard left two vehicles totaled and one person in critical condition late Friday morning.

Police responded to the intersection of Merrick Road and Carman Boulevard in East Massapequa after a red SUV and an Optimum truck collided, causing serious damage to both vehicles. Officials say that the driver of the red Mazda SUV attempted to turn left from the eastbound lanes into the parking of the Lidl grocery store, located at 5601 Merrick Rd, Massapequa, NY 11758, when it was struck by the westbound traveling truck.

Both drivers of the vehicles were injured. The 76-year-old man driving the Mazda SUV was listed to be in critical condition, according to police. The 29-year-old driver of the Optimum Dodge Ram truck received only minor injuries.

Both victims were transported to local area hospitals for further medical treatment.

A crime scene was established and Merrick Road was closed for an investigation to be conducted into the crash. Police say that there is no criminality suspected at this time in regard to the crash. Both vehicles were impounded for brake and safety checks.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
