Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Train Near Mineola LIRR Station

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Penn Station bound Long Island Railroad train late Tuesday night in Mineola, New York.

Police are investigating the events that led up to the death of a pedestrian who was struck and killed by a train late Tuesday night at the Mineola Long Island Railroad train station. At around 10:54PM, police and firefighters were notified that a pedestrian was struck by a train on its way to Penn Station in the vicinity of the Mineola station.

MTA released that the victim was Chesnel Veillard, 81, of New Cassel. Veillard went missing hours prior and had dementia according to the MTA. Officials also confirmed that Veillard was trespassing on the tracks at the time when he was struck and killed by the train.

When crews arrived on scene, they determined that the pedestrian confirmed to be dead after power was shut off to the tracks. The victim was reportedly trapped underneath the train as police began their investigation.

Many commuters were left stranded in Mineola after service was shut down in both directions for at least 3 hours, canceling and delaying numerous trains in both directions.
