Good Samaritans Rush to Rescue Pilot In Long Island Plane Crash

Multiple agencies from Nassau and Suffolk County responded to a landfill where a plane crashed after experiencing complications while in flight Sunday afternoon.

Nassau County Police arrived quickly on the scene after a plane crashed into a Town of Oyster Bay Solid Waste Complex facility on Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road early Sunday afternoon. The plane went down after attempting to return to Republic Airport while experiencing unknown issues while in flight.

Good samaritans rushed to the aid of the pilot, who was the only occupant on the plane at the time. Residents and passing motorists heard the crash and saw the plane hit the ground prior to rushing into the landfill to render aid. One good samaritan climbed onto the plane and kept the pilot talking while waiting for emergency services to arrive on the scene.

The pilot was pinned inside the plane, which crashed into sections of fencing and guardrail that made it difficult for first responders to access.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino expressed extreme gratitude for the swift response of the police officers who rushed to the town landfill to help the injured pilot.

The pilot, identified as Marc Capus was alert and conscious by the time first responders arrived to help remove him from the plane. He was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in a stable condition.

The FAA and NTSB are currently investigating this incident.
