Ambulance Bursts Into Flames On Southern State Parkway

NORTH MERRICK, NY - An NYU Langone Hospital ambulance burst into flames late Tuesday night while traveling westbound on the Southern State Parkway.

Westbound traffic became snarled just after 10:45PM on the Southern State Parkway just east of Exit 24 after an NYU Langone Health ambulance caught fire while traveling in the fast lane.

New York State Police arrived on scene and confirmed that the ambulance was well-involved with fire and that oxygen tanks on board the ambulance were exploding, contributing to the intensity of the blaze.

There is no word on what the cause of the fire was, but it is believed to be from a mechanical issue according to witnesses at the scene.

There were no reported injuries as a result of this fire.

All lanes of the Southern State Parkway were closed while firefighters battled the vehicle fire. All westbound lanes of traffic have been reopened after the charred ambulance was removed by a private tow company.
