Amazon Truck Slams Into Southern State Overpass, Causes Natural Gas Leak
An Amazon truck slammed into the Oakfield Avenue overpass while driving on the Southern State Parkway late Monday night in North Bellmore, New York.
A large presence of emergency services responded to the Southern State Parkway near Exit 25, just before 10 PM on Monday night after an Amazon tractor-trailer collided with the Oakfield Avenue overpass bridge.
The truck, which is not authorized to drive on the parkway, slammed into the low overpass, wedged itself under it, and sheared a compressed natural gas canister off the top of the vehicle. It’s at that point when the canister sustained a “catastrophic failure”. According to the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office, all four of the natural gas cylinders on the truck were actively leaking.
The North Bellmore Fire Department notified the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Hazardous Materials Response Division to respond to the scene and assist. New York State Police, Nassau County Police, and the Wantagh Fire Department were able to assist with freeing the truck from the overpass.
