10 Injured In Pittsburgh Bridge Collapse
Ten people were injured after a bridge in Pittsburgh, PA collapsed while vehicles were driving on it early Friday morning.
At approximately 7:00AM on Friday morning, Pittsburgh Public Safety announced that the Fern Hollow Bridge collapsed, leaving people trapped in the ravine below. Emergency crews had to create a human chain to help rescue victims trapped on a transit bus that was left dangling off the bridge. Inside the bus, a driver and two passengers were among the injured.
Among the injured were multiple first responders who slipped and fell in the slippery, snowy conditions during the morning commute.
Pittsburgh Fire Chief Darryl Jones said that crews had to rappel about 100 feet to rescue those below.
The major collapse led to a large gas leak which prompted evacuations of nearby homes. Witnesses say that the collapse was proceeded by the sound of hissing and the strong odor of natural gas.
The collapse came just hours before President Biden was set to deliver a speech about his $1 trillion infrastructure law, which has allocated approximately $1.6 billion for Pennsylvania bridge maintenance.
